Writing here about life and sport I find that
memories come and go a lot. Some of them are coming back right now. There are
others that stick around more than most.
The
thing about memories is get new ones every day. The funny thing though the new
ones seem hard to remember a few days away. For example, what I did last week I
don’t remember all that well. I am sure they will come back to me at some
point. The one I remember the most recently was seeing Ken at the grocery
store. We run into each other every once in a while at the same store. Ken is
someone I grew up with here in Gig Harbor. We were in some of the same classes
along with playing basketball and baseball. He was very good in both sports
starting on the high school basketball team as a senior and was on the school
team for baseball. He played guard on the basketball team and was a pitcher on
baseball. At least that is what I remember anyway. I am sure he played another
position in baseball when not pitching. I know it was not shortstop because a
guy named Joe played there. What made it unusual for Joe playing short was that
he bat and threw left handed. The coach almost always puts a lefty at first
base or in the outfield. Joe though played short really good. Being left handed
was not a handicap for him.
Another
position Ken did not play was center field. The guy was Rob and he did a good job
patrolling the outfield. Also Ken did not play third because my best friend
Gary played there. So that leaves a lot of other positions for Ken besides
pitcher of course.
Ken
is now working as a fisherman. He will be heading north to Alaska in May. He
will be there through July. I met his wife Cindy at the store as well. I asked
him if she goes up north and helps him fish. He said that she does go up but
does not stick around to help with the fishing. The season is short however Ken
puts in a lot of hours in those days.
I
asked Ken if he knew about the school reunion in August. He said that he ran
into Dave whose house the reunion will be at so he plans to be there. So it
will be great to make new memories in August as well as talking about the old
ones with classmates.
I
am sure we can all think about the memories over time. They are not all good
ones. When I was four I was burned and I spent six weeks in the hospital. The
thing is I don’t remember the experience or anything prior to that time. I am
sure most of us don’t remember our lives at that young age but I don’t remember
any. The thing is we sometimes suppress certain memories because of how hard or
difficult the time was. In my circumstances remember the time being burn I am
sure I would get a lot of bad dreams. So in my case not remember those memories
is a good thing.
I
recommend not trying to open up old memories that you should not remember
however cherish the ones you do. Until next time have a great weekend.
